Chapter Ride to an 1880's Ghost Town

Chloride, New Mexico

Lead Road Captain: Moses

Rear Road Captain: Scoop

Moses will lead us back in time to the ghost town. While you are there, you can explore and attempt to find any ghosts to join you, in a selfie. This will be a picnic lunch because there are no eateries close by.

Chloride got its start in the late 1870’s by accident. A mule skinner named Harry Pye was hauling freight through the area for the U.S. Army when he found some “float” that he thought might be silver ore in a creek bed. He kept this information a secret until his Army contract expired in 1879 and he went back and staked his claim. The history of Chloride reads like the script for a bad western: silver strike, population boom, Apache raids, salvation by the militia, cattle versus sheep, tar and feathering, and even bear attacks. During the 1880s, Chloride had one hundred homes, 1,000-2,000 people, eight saloons, three general stores, restaurants, butcher shops, a candy store, a lawyer’s office, a doctor, boarding houses and several other buildings.

Today, about twenty-seven of the original buildings are still standing, including the Pioneer Store, which is now a museum and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Linda with the Pioneer Store and Museum will have extra staff on hand to provide our group a tour and answer any questions we may have. They have a brand-new covered picnic area for us to use.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for the ride safety briefing.  KSU is from Thunderbird Harley-Davidson at 9:00am. After leaving Thunderbird, we'll take I-25 to Lemitar for a gas stop. We will get back on I-25 to the exit for 181 or Rock Canyon Rd. We will turn on 142. 142 will take us to Tortilla Flats Road which changes to Geronimo Trail Scenic Rd. We will pass through Winston and shortly arrive in Chloride.

This 175-mile ride will take approximately 3 hours plus the gas stop.
